Title: Development of neutron production targets

Speakers (CNEA): Alma Bertolo & Mariela Del Grosso

Summary of the Presentation: In a talk held at ESS Bilbao, Dr. Alma Bertolo and Dr. Mariela F. del Grosso presented advances in the development of neutron production targets, a crucial component for various technological and scientific applications. During the presentation, they highlighted the work carried out in the design, development, and characterization of these targets, which include materials such as 9Be, 12C, 13C, Ti-D, and Ti-T.

The team has developed accelerators for Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT), an innovative radiotherapy technique used in the treatment of certain types of cancer. International projects related to BNCT and technology transfer with institutions such as the Korean Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences (KIRAMS) were also discussed.

A key highlight was the innovation in cooling systems and the use of high-entropy alloys for target armor, achieving significant advances in efficiency and durability. These developments have been recognized with awards like the Grand Innovar Prize, underscoring the relevance and impact of this work in the field of accelerator technology.

Title: Ab initio molecular dynamics and path integral Monte Carlo simulations of the ferroelectric phase transition in KDP.

Speaker (UNR): Sergio Koval

Summary of the Presentation:

In a recent presentation in Madrid, Dr. Sergio Koval, from the Institute of Physics Rosario (IFIR–CONICET) and the National University of Rosario (UNR), shared significant advances in the study of the ferroelectric phase transition in potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP). Using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and Monte Carlo techniques with path integrals, Koval and his team investigated how nuclear quantum effects influence the structure and proton transfer barriers in this material.

The research also addressed the effects of deuteration and pressure on the phase transition of KDP, successfully reproducing, in a qualitative manner, the isotopic effects observed experimentally. Additionally, calculation methods integrating quantum corrections were validated, and a one-dimensional model was developed to simulate these phenomena. The conclusions highlight that geometric and tunneling effects complement each other in explaining the experimental observations, providing a deeper understanding of ferroelectric transitions in hydrogen-bonded materials.

Title: Electronic Stopping in Liquid, Water, Vapor, Ice and Solvated DNA

Summary of the Presentation: Researcher Jorge Kohanoff from the Institute of Nuclear Fusion at the Polytechnic University of Madrid has presented a study on the interaction of protons and electrons in water and solvated DNA. Using advanced quantum simulations, he discovered a new phenomenon called “electronically mediated nuclear stopping,” which could have significant implications for cancer treatments (hadron therapy), space protection, and nuclear technology. This work also sheds light on how water affects the DNA’s response to radiation.
